Freshman Wins German Scholarship

Connor Phillips was named a recipient of the National German Exam Scholarship and the winner of a three-week trip to Germany.

The all-expenses-paid trip will take place this summer. He earned this by placing first on the National German Exam in the state of West Virginia.

Connor was one of only 37 students in the United States and the only student in the state of West Virginia to receive this award.

To be eligible to receive this prestigious award, students must first qualify for the scholarship by achieving a score in the 90th percentile of the National German exam, submit a scholarship application and be nominated by a local chapter of the American Association of Teachers of German. Students then have to take another test and are then nominated for the scholarship by a national committee.

Scholarship recipients receive roundtrip airfare to Germany, will attend classes at an academic high school in Germany, stay in homestays with host families and have an opportunity to visit cultural and historic sites including trips to cities, monuments and castles throughout the country.

The scholarship has been awarded for nearly 60 years and is funded by the Federal Republic of Germany through the German Foreign Office and the Pedagogical Exchange Program. For more information about the National German Exam Scholarship, visit https://www.nge.aatg.org/ngescholarship.
