Welcome Back and Happy New Year!

Welcome Back and Happy New Year!

As we embark on a new year, I am filled with excitement and anticipation for the incredible opportunities ahead.

The start of a new year offers a fresh start, and it presents us with the time to set the tone for the months to come. As Head of School, I encourage each one of you to make the most of this new beginning.

One invaluable tool that I know can greatly contribute to your success is setting SMART goals. Our Linsly students may be familiar with setting SMART goals because we emphasize this activity in the James F. Companion Leadership Institute program, and many faculty advisors also facilitate goal setting with their advisees using the same format. SMART goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. By incorporating these elements into developing goals, we can create a roadmap for success and track our progress while remaining focused on what truly matters.

Starting the semester with a clean slate is a powerful notion. It's a chance to learn from previous challenges or setbacks, leave them behind, and approach the future with renewed vigor. I encourage and challenge students to reflect on their aspirations and dreams, then translate those aspirations into clear and actionable SMART goals.

The upcoming semester will be filled with many opportunities for Linsly students to get involved - through the arts, athletics, or extracurricular clubs. One such annual opportunity is the highly anticipated Linsly Extravaganza. For those new to Linsly, this is an all-school variety show that promises to be a spectacular event, showcasing the diverse talents that make up our vibrant Linsly community. Whether you're a performer, stage crew member or an enthusiastic audience member, this is an occasion for our entire school community to come together for a fabulous evening of entertainment that we look forward to every year! Mark your calendars for the show on March 1. (Tickets will go on sale in mid-February and this event always sells out!)

Winter sports are also already underway, providing an avenue for students to engage in teamwork, discipline, and physical fitness. From the ice to the wrestling mat, in the pool or at the bowling alley or basketball court, these experiences foster not only athletic prowess but also valuable life skills.

Furthermore, as always, leadership opportunities abound in the coming semester. I encourage each student to take the chance to make a positive impact within the school and beyond through clubs or community service projects. Leadership is not solely about titles; it's about influence, character, and a commitment to serving others.

As we navigate the challenges and triumphs of the year ahead, let us remember our school theme for the year, “Energy and Persistence Conquer All Things,” from Benjamin Franklin. Embrace the clean slate of this new semester, set SMART goals that align with your aspirations, and let the journey unfold. Together, as a Linsly family, we can make this academic year one of unparalleled success and fulfillment.

Wishing you all a fantastic start to the new year.

Warm regards,

Justin Zimmerman
