The secret to warmth and comfort in the outdoors is layering! Layering traps body heated air, reduces heat loss from convection and radiation, and allows the individual to accurately control his or her body temperature in cold conditions by merely adding or subtracting a layer.

Cotton layers (such as sweatshirts and jeans) do not work well due to their water-absorbing properties and lack of insulation. Wool, polypropylene, and polyester absorb almost no water and insulate extremely well.
