Self-Discovery and Personal Growth

Linsly wants students to be active participants, not passive recipients, in their learning. We know the best learning takes place when students are engaged and motivated to do their best work.

Linsly wants students to be active participants, not passive recipients, in their learning. We know the best learning takes place when students are engaged and motivated to do their best work.

We also know that the purest form of learning requires students to take risks. That's why we have created an atmosphere where students can step out of their comfort zone to discover all the potential within them. Whether we are asking students to take a step on a high ropes element at The Linsly Outdoor Center, or engage an intellectual argument in English class, or perform some mathematical operation on the board in front of others, we want students to know their steps outside the comfort zone are safe and carefully supported.

The results of this approach are spectacular. A seventh grader scales the climbing wall at the Linsly Outdoor Center; the linebacker on the football team plays Pharaoh in the musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat; a teacher conducts his version of American Idol after a difficult test in English class; an Upper School student submits her artwork and wins "Best in Show"; a student tries soccer for the first time and loves it.

All of this happens only when students feel secure in their steps outside their comfort zone.

As The Association of Boarding Schools explains, "Boarding school students learn about themselves and gain self-esteem by trying new things and taking risks. Our schools offer hundreds of afternoon and weekend activities that teach students important lessons outside the classroom. These carefully supervised programs allow students to explore new interests and discover new talents and dreams."

From Linsly's weekend ski trips to our ventures to Pittsburgh's cultural district, there is a new experience waiting for our boarding students around virtually every corner.
