Forward and No Retreat: 200 Years of Linsly School Life
is the title of a new book written by Richard Hawley
. Copies are available for purchase in the school's book store, located on the first floor.
Now entering its third century of continuous operation, the Linsly School is the oldest school of any kind in the state of West Virginia.
Today’s school was set in motion in 1814 when a visionary young lawyer, Noah Linsly
, left in his will instructions and the resources to construct a progressive academy for children of his adopted village, Wheeling.
This bicentennial narrative of Linsly’s story will introduce you to men and women, whether as faculty, staff, or trustees, who have been the stewards of Noah Linsly’s mission to serve the children of the region and beyond. The record also includes the voices and sentiments of Linsly’s students over the decades.
The successive eras of the school’s progress mount to a satisfying story, revealing today a humanely traditional yet intellectually progressive school, a school preparing its boys and girls for success in college and beyond.
Having emerged from its past challenges unbowed, the men and women, boys and girls of Linsly enter their new century very much in the spirit of their founder: looking forward—and no retreat.
