Physical Education Department

The philosophy of the Physical Education Department is to address the physical, mental, loco-motor and sociological development of each student.

A Linsly Physical Fitness Profile will be done at the beginning and end of each year to measure individual physical progress and development. Individual differences are recognized and program s are adjusted accordingly, The Physical Education Program enables the student to enjoy numerous activities while simultaneously teaching respect, courtesy, fair play and good sportsmanship in a safe environment. In addition, the understanding of the value of lifelong fitness is fostered.

The middle school Physical Education Program is based on a planned sequential curriculum that is designed to teach basic skills, cooperative activities and developmentally appropriate games. The middle school program emphasizes body awareness, self-image, self-control, self-motivation and comprehension of rules and regulations of activities and sports.

The upper school emphasizes a continuation of lifetime and recreational activities to develop an interest in and to gain knowledge for a lifestyle of physical activity and wellness. To promote physical activity throughout a student’s high school career, upper school students are encouraged to be physically active during two of the three sports seasons in each academic year. Students may choose to participate in interscholastic sports teams or physical education electives which include: Life Saving, Weight Lifting, Team Sports.

The philosophy of the Linsly Health program is to take a holistic approach to health through an emphasis on lifelong wellness and character development. The health curriculum is rigorous and encourages each student to strive for excellence and personal growth. The program of study addresses traditional health topics such as nutrition, hygiene, physical development, relationships, and healthy choices in a developmentally appropriate way, but also strives to make real world connections to these topics by examining relevant cultural and societal trends. The Health program at Linsly is designed to serve as a complement to academics fostering student understanding of the important connection between healthy behaviors and academic and emotional wellness. An overall aim of the program is for students to build communication and leadership skills to ultimately gain a sense of identity and become advocates of their own personal health.
