Mathematics Department

This course emphasizes the thorough study of the four operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with whole numbers, decimals, and fractions with and without calculator usage. Emphasis is also given to application and challenge problems with these four operations. A thorough study of the relationship between fractions, decimals, and percents is also included. Geometry concepts are used for enrichment. Math skills are applied in a number of practical activities such as school measurements, grocery shopping, recipe multiplication and more.

This course is designed to provide the student with the necessary arithmetic skills to be successful in higher level math classes. Students should leave the course with a solid background in the four operations with whole numbers, integers, and fractions. Students should also be proficient with percent problems and solving inverse operation problems. They should gain a technological competence through the use of their iPads in conjunction with classroom activities. And, finally, students should be able to take this knowledge and apply it to their work in the real world efficiently and confidently.

Concepts of Algebra I are reviewed and extended, then new topics of algebra are studied. Students will gain significant experience using the TI 84 Plus CE graphing calculator. This course is a requirement for graduation.

This course is designed to strengthen algebra and geometry skills for college preparation, but is not at the faster Pre Calculus pace. In addition to mastering the skills covered in the course material, students will also gain significant experience in using a graphing calculator.

Students in this course must have demonstrated competence in earlier Mathematics courses up to and including Pre Calculus. The course thoroughly covers the material listed in the College Board’s Advanced Placement Course Description Book for Calculus AB. The material consists of limits, continuity, derivatives, both graphical and numerical, integration, both graphical and numerical, applications of the derivatives, and applications of integration. The graphing calculator is used extensively for understanding concepts, solving problems, and confirming results.

Students in this course must have demonstrated competence in AP Calculus AB. The course covers all of the material in Calculus AB in addition to improper integrals, indeterminate forms, infinite series, additional techniques of integration, additional applications of the definite integral, parametric equations, polar coordinates, vector functions, differential equations, slopefields, Euler’s method, and logistic equations. The graphing calculator is used extensively for understanding concepts, solving problems, and confirming results.

This course follows the successful completion of Algebra I. It covers plane and solid Geometry using inductive and deductive reasoning. Students will study relationships between lines, angles, triangles, similar and congruent polygons, and circles. A study of proofs and practical applications, including perimeter, area, and volume is also included. Algebra is reviewed and right triangle trigonometry is introduced.

Math Finance is a half credit mathematics elective designed to connect practical mathematical concepts to personal and business settings. This course offers informative and highly useful lessons that challenge students to gain a deeper understanding of personal finance and preview some real life decision making they will soon face. Relevant, project based learning activities cover stimulating topics such as personal financial planning, budgeting, and wise spending, banking, paying taxes, long term investing, economic principles, and managing credit and loans. Students will also gain valuable experience working with Google Sheets throughout the semester. This course encourages mastery of math skill sets, including decimals, percentages, proportions, data analysis, linear systems, and exponential functions.

This course is designed to provide the student with the background that is necessary to be successful in algebra. It introduces the student to operations with signed numbers and to working with variables and solving algebraic equations. The course strengthens the student’s ability to perform algebraic techniques with and without the use of calculators.

This course requires students to analyze polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric functions both algebraically and graphically and use that information to predict answers; graph polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions with and without technology. Students will continue to apply the skills presented and assessed in previous mathematics courses as well as prepare for college level Calculus.

Commonly known as “Statistics”, this course is an introduction to the mathematical principals and underlying statistical techniques that are used in the fields of economics, business, education and the sciences. The course uses the TI 83 plus, or newer, calculator and excel spreadsheets, to summarise, describe, graph, and evaluate sets of data.
