Health Services

The Health Center staff is dedicated to the belief that students must maintain a healthy and balanced life in order to reap the benefits of a Linsly School education. The mission of the Health Center is to promote and maintain the good health of students by modifying or removing health-related barriers to learning. It is our goal to help students better understand the world they live in so that they make well-informed decisions regarding their health, wellness, and academic endeavors.

The health center is staffed by two registered nurses,  Mrs. Kelly Metz and Ms. Tori Simons,  as well as our school counselor, Ms. Sara Quigley. Our nurses practice under the guidance of local physician partners.  The Health Office’s hours of operation are 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM Monday through Friday. The health office is located on the bottom floor of Baynes Hall.   Health staff is on-call for boarding student emergencies anytime the health center is closed and can be reached through the Administrator on Duty.

Medical services provided include assessment and direct medical care for illness or injury, administration of daily and “as needed” medication per the student’s physician orders, health care education, and compliance management for all West Virginia State-mandated immunizations.  Our Nursing staff also coordinates any care provided by an outside physician, therapist, or urgent/emergency care center.

Mental health services that are provided by the school counselor include a broad spectrum of assessment, prevention, intervention, and referral services. Within these services, the counselor works one-on-one or in a group setting to help promote academic success for every student. Students struggling with stress, anxiety, depression, eating disorders, or any other issues are encouraged to reach out to the counselor for guidance.

Linsly also has two athletic trainers, Mr. Tom Giovengo, MS, ATC, PTA and Mrs. Chelsea Brown, MS, ATC, who are available to our athletes after school and are present at campus sporting events. They provide preventative services, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention, concussion protocol, rehabilitation of injuries, and medical conditions. They are here to ensure the proper steps are taken for our athletes to safely return to play.

Annual Health Requirements

All medical information is uploaded by parents or guardians to an online database and health management system called Magnus Health SMR (Student Medical Record). This secure, web-based system allows the parent/guardian to have continuous access to the student’s health record as well as the ability to make updates and upload new documents as needed.  Additional benefits of the Magnus Health system include:

  • The ability to upload parent and physician signed documents directly into the system from a computer or mobile device, thus eliminating the need to turn in paper forms to the school
  • Securely stored data that will only require annual parental updates /review after the student’s first year using the system
  • The timesaving ability to "copy" shared information such as health insurance and emergency contact information from one sibling to another
  • Customer support from a Magnus Health representative via phone or email
  • The ability to take your digital health file with you after your child graduates

Parents/guardians of officially enrolled students can access Magnus Health directly from this page or the Linsly School home page by selecting the orange “Magnus Health” button.  Log-in credentials will be the same as those used to sign on to the parent/guardian’s My Backpack account.  ***Please note that new students will not have access until approximately July 1st or 1-3 business days after the student's enrollment deposit is processed (if received after July 1st).  New families will receive a welcome email from Magnus Health once their account is active.***

Within the Magnus health portal, users will be prompted to answer a series of health questions and complete necessary health requirements for the school year.  Some of the items that you may be required to complete are listed below:

  • Student Health Record (on-line health history, emergency contacts, health insurance information) – Required for all students then followed by annual review
  • Physical Examination Form – Annual requirement (physicals over a year old from the start of school will not satisfy this requirement)
  • Immunization Form – Required for all NEW students and then only when needed for updated immunizations and those required for 7th or 12th grade WV State mandates
  • Medical Authorization and Consent to Treat Form – Required for all students annually
  • Over-the-counter Medication Form – Required for all students annually
  • Prescription Medication Form - if applicable
  • Asthma Action Plan Form - if applicable
  • Food Allergy Action Plan Form - if applicable
  • Diabetes Action Plan Form - if applicable
  • Seizure Action Plan Form - if applicable

Forms that require a physician signature or an additional attachment such as an insurance card can be accessed and downloaded directly from your Magnus Health Portal.  You will then have the opportunity to fax the completed forms directly to Magnus Health to be uploaded to your child’s account OR you can scan and upload the forms to your child’s account from your computer.

Immunization Requirements

Immunization Requirements:  Below is a description of immunization requirements as outlined by West Virginia State Code 64CSR95. Regardless of residency, students must comply with these state laws if they attend any school in the state of West Virginia.  Failure to comply with these requirements may result in students not being permitted to attend school.

All immunization requirements must be fulfilled in Magnus Health prior to arrival on campus. If a specific immunization is not available in your country of origin, please know that Health Services will make arrangements for your child to receive any required immunizations.  If your child does not have the required immunizations, your child cannot attend school in the state of West Virginia.

Tdap booster Proof of additional booster required for 7th grade. Dose must contain Pertussis vaccine. Td is not acceptable.

Health Insurance Requirements: Boarding Students

Out of concern for the health and welfare of all our boarding students, The Linsly School requires that every boarding student be covered by a comprehensive injury and medical insurance plan for the entire school year. Insurance plans must cover your child in the State of West Virginia and provide a United States address and phone number for claims and customer service. Travel insurance is NOT accepted as medical insurance, due to inadequate medical coverage.  Plans that require pre-payment for services (besides nominal co-payments) are not acceptable.

FOR INTERNATIONAL BOARDING STUDENTS:

In order to ensure quality, efficient and immediate care from local health care providers, all international boarding students are required to pay for and be enrolled in ISM International Student Accident and Illness Insurance.

Parents are asked to NOT initiate individual policies on their own as the school will automatically initiate all policies for international boarding students.  The 2023-2024 group rate for an international Linsly student SILVER PLAN is $1600 for the 10-month school term and it is reflected in the fee schedule of the student’s contract.  This price reflects a discounted group rate versus the rate of same policy when purchased individually.

This policy does not cover routine dental care and treatment of chronic dental or orthodontic issues .  It does, however, cover injury (while on campus or at a school related event) to “natural, sound teeth.”

ISM insurance is underwritten by GeoBlue. This plan was chosen after careful consideration to provide the most cost-effective, comprehensive international student accident, illness and wellness coverage for the Wheeling, WV area.

***IMPORTANT! Please do not renew previous/existing insurance plans or purchase other plans! There will be no exceptions for outside insurance carriers for international students.***

FOR DOMESTIC BOARDING STUDENTS:

As a parent or guardian, it is your responsibility to contact your insurance company to confirm that your insurance plan will cover your child in the State of West Virginia. Some insurance companies provide away-from-home coverage, while others may provide out-of-network coverage, but at a higher cost. Talk with your insurance company about what medical benefits will be curtailed, and what deductibles and co-payments will be required, if any, when your child receives care away from home.

It is the responsibility of the parent or guardian to obtain referrals for your child if and when they are needed, and to follow through in a timely manner with all insurance paperwork as it arises, including the submission of claims.

The Health Center is required to provide a copy of the front and back of all pertinent insurance cards to providers at the time of service.  It is very important that DOMESTIC boarding students provide us with an ENLARGED copy of both the FRONT and BACK of all insurance cards (health, prescription, and dental). You will be prompted to upload these copies to your Magnus Health Portal.

If your health insurance changes at any time during the school year, it is the parent or guardian's responsibility to send updated insurance information for your child to the school nurse at healthservices@linsly.org.

Additionally, for domestic boarders, it is the responsibility of the parent to arrange for transportation and accompany your child to any check ups (unless discussed with Health Services), maintenance or follow up appointments. Examples include primary care routine evaluations, dental, orthodontic, orthopedic and mental health visits. It is your responsibility to notify Mr. Brubaker of any absences and provide a physician’s excuse for the absence and imperative to notify Health Services of any changes in your child physical and mental wellbeing, maintenance and/or needs.

Medication Administration

All students who require the administration of daily or “as needed” prescription medication must provide written physician orders and parental permission before any medication can be administered. Medication order forms are available from the Magnus Health Portal within each student’s account.  Once authorized signatures and medication orders are obtained, they should be uploaded to the student’s Magnus Health account for approval by the school nurse.

For all non-boarding students, it is the responsibility of the parents/guardians to send in all associated medications in the original prescription containers or OTC packaging.  Student name, medication name, medication dose/strength, administration route and administration times/frequency must be visible on the packaging.  This is also true for any medication that is sent in for field trips or Linsly Experiential Outdoor Programs.

BOARDING STUDENTS ONLY:
The Linsly School has partnered with Riesbeck’s pharmacy in St. Clairsville, Ohio for prescription delivery, refills, and unit dose packaging of all BOARDING STUDENT medications.   Physicians are asked to call in, fax, or mail prescriptions to:

Riesbeck’s Pharmacy Store #7
104 Plaza Drive
St. Clairsville, OH 43950
Phone: 740-695-0274
Fax:  740-695-2412
NPI: 1598764086

Parents are asked to call the store to complete student registration 3-4 weeks prior to the start of school so that prescription refills have time to be synched with their due dates.  Prescription / Health insurance information and a form of payment for any co-pays or deductibles are required to complete registration.

Prescriptions written by a physician outside the United States will require coordination with our school physician for a United States based prescription.  Please email the school nurse to schedule a consultation prior to August 1st.
